Legendary fantasy artist Chris Achilleos has died aged 74

British artist Chris Achilleos died this week at 74, reports Doctor Who News. Achilleos’ glamorous fantasy artwork adorned everything from album covers to fantasy novels and movie posters.

Achilleos’ iconic style combined vibrant colors, meticulous details, and an innovative blend of historical, psychedelic and comic book influences. Although much of his work was made to order, to be miniaturized and serve as book covers, album covers and movie posters, Achilléos made all of his canvases on a large scale, which made him allowed to showcase his rare technical know-how, refined during his scientific studies. and technical drawing.

The ambition of his work was such that it caught the attention of George Lucas, who hired him as a conceptual artist for the visual effects centerpiece. willow; it was a position Achilleos previously held on the production of the cult classic Heavy Metal, along with John Candy and Harold Ramis.

Embedded here is my favorite Achilleos work, “Dragonspell”, illustrating his gift for making genre fantasy sharper and less comfortable without going dark.
